It's enough to deter some people, but if someone comes along later with their own SUPERCAT it might be difficult to prove you were there first.
Legally, it does protect them. It just may be difficult to prove you owned it first under some circumstances. But there are (I think) services where you can register your copyright for a price, and that'll serve as proof.
You may be able to stick a TM on the end of the name if it is unique enough, and if you've got the cash you could register that trademark (R).
I think that's similar to US copyright law. Wikipedia, I think, has some good info on it, and when it comes to law Wikipedia usually has a section in each article specifically pertaining to US law.

i always do a collective work of all my art and level designs and register with the library of copyrights. it costs about $45 to do it, or $35 if you do it online with the library of copyrights. its protection, just in case you have to bring someone to court.
My Famous Quotes: "Hip hop is like a virus, infecting everyone and everything around it. Every form of media has some way, shape or form, assimilated hip hop into it." It has also mutated into other strains like, trip hop, house, rap, gangster, and conscious forms. Once you are infected with it, its with you for life."

if you have original backup files and back them up on cds, which show the file creation dates, you may be able to use that as more evidence, but If you want real protection register the copyright. You can't use the TM because unless you have registered Supercat under a Trademark, it's illegal to "fake" a trademark.
Using the (c) is fine because you are protected under creative rights. For more info check the us copyright website.
