I wonder where the thumb of your right (or left) hand goes. (the hand which is at the trigger so to speak)

Other than that I'd have thought that this is some kind of Plasma-Gun.
(Plasma Automatic Submachine Gun, lol)

If you are a believer in "engineering realism" like me, devices must look like they were designed for their task.

Using that premise, heres a list of things "wrong" with the gun. (not on order of importance)
1> It looks to need three hands to operate. (just a visual thing)
2> The slanted cocking-slide will 'destroy' your aim between shots. (Re-cocking will drag your aim down between shots)
3> Barrel MUCH too short for a 'scatter' projectile. (Scatter-ammo plus short barrel severely reduces effective range)
4> Cocking mechanism(front) and ammo-reservoir(rear) are too far apart. Mechanism would be too delicate.

Almost all "real" guns of today look the way thay do for one simple reason.
Its the most "useful" shape for the gun to be.
Go beyond that and the guns starts getting "difficult" or "tricky" to use, and thats bad in a combat situation.

Hey, that doesnt matter, everyone has to start somewhere.
Ive had to go over these issues multiple times with some of my son's
weapon designs for our RPG. (its a long way away so dont ask)

He got some inspiration from some of the final fantasy series weapons.
You know the ones, swords one foot wide and twelve feet long? A little impractical.
With "mechanical" devices, that sort of non-realism looks ugly real quick, in any scenario.

Hmmm...some sort of small laser pistol.

People expect a lot from weapons...lots of meaningless details of questionable function are expected. I kind of like the design but for the words and the metal clip that looks like a crank.

In all my days as an artist, what I've grown to understand is that you never want to show drawings like this. Spend 8 hours on a concept and drop some jaws, then get input; otherwise, folks will always be getting confused between the quickness of the drawing and the quality of the idea behind it. Keep quick concept internal...or don't, but I have observed that when people ask for quick ideas what they really want are finished jaw dropping ideas.

actually vertex, this was why i posted it here.. it was suppose to be a machine gun but i wanted to prove that the design was too "alien" to be noticed, what i mean is, if i have to look at it for more than 10 seconds to know its a machine gun, then its not going in the game, we want players to be familiar with the game weaps without us putting the big "you picked up a machine gun" onscreen

np, dark, I get you-- Just trying to put my 2 cents in from the perspective of/for the benefit of the poor artist who is having his work scrutenized. You must always try and "turn it to 11" as an artist. (See Spinal Tap the movie if you don't know that reference.)

I agree with you though-- polished drawing or not. That is not a machine gun-- not even a futuristic one. A big ammo clip would help. I agree; I think even with fictional weapons it must "evoke" the proper weapon.

I'm all about solutions:
Instead of the words there now, just write "machine gun" on the gun or better yet have the character say "I have picked up the machine gun."

...or a generic audio file when the character picks up or selects the proper weapon "What a lovely..." And then a second audio file for the weapons... "grenade launcher" "marshmellow shooter" "cosmic hammer gun" etc...

Okay funny solutions don't count. Back to the drawing board.
