Suggestion for a workaround: If you created your level mostly out of blocks, it takes more time to build (only if you changed some blocks, otherwise you should use Update Entities) and the level is slower. I would recommend to use models for creating levels. But maybe you can try the "Export to MDL7 file" in WED and use this exported MDL7-level file in a new WED-file (I guess I like the word "file" crazy ).

Group your blocks together to some "areas".
Select an area in the Level-objects list,
right click, "MODE"->"EXCLUDE".

Voila - this area won´t be compiled.

no science involved

If constructed properly, levels made from blocks can actually be much faster than levels made from models. The BSP tree that is generated during the compilation process enables the engine to select which areas of the level need not be rendered, which can greatly increase the speed of some levels. Levels made from models don't have this advantage.

Using models for a level had a speed advantage in A6, but not in A7. So you should normally always use level geometry. Models have no lightmaps.

Compiling only a part of the level is possible with EXCLUDE, but then this part won't be visible in the game. Compiling only a part of the level and using previous WMB data for the rest would be difficult to implement, and would not make much sense as non-bsp level compiling is not time consuming anyway.

You could eat something while the compiler builds...

Or just disable the lightmap while testing the level and if everything looks fine, enable it again.
