Suggestion for a workaround: If you created your level mostly out of blocks, it takes more time to build (only if you changed some blocks, otherwise you should use Update Entities) and the level is slower. I would recommend to use models for creating levels. But maybe you can try the "Export to MDL7 file" in WED and use this exported MDL7-level file in a new WED-file (I guess I like the word "file"  ).

Group your blocks together to some "areas". Select an area in the Level-objects list, right click, "MODE"->"EXCLUDE".
Voila - this area won´t be compiled.

If constructed properly, levels made from blocks can actually be much faster than levels made from models. The BSP tree that is generated during the compilation process enables the engine to select which areas of the level need not be rendered, which can greatly increase the speed of some levels. Levels made from models don't have this advantage.

You could eat something while the compiler builds...
Or just disable the lightmap while testing the level and if everything looks fine, enable it again.
