I sooooooo wanted to say this one, everytime a movie does it my friends all stare because they think im going to start to bitch grin

Now that's something I do totally agree with. There's really no way to enhance images to this extend. You might be able to sharpen things up to get objects out of a blurry picture, but you won't be able to zoom in, enhance ever more and get a crystal clear image. tongue Waaay too far-fetched and frankly it's also overused in movies.

- If a town is threatened by an impending natural desaster, the threat is uncovered by only one scientist, but the town won't be evacuated because 1) nobody believes the scientist and 2) an important and unreschedulable event is taking place in the town.

- If a fleet of highly advanced alien spacecraft devastates whole countries on earth without effort, they can still be stopped by infecting their mother ship with a computer virus that disables their shields. And as if the virus wasn't awesome enough, all alien spacecraft are completely worthless without their shields and they are no match for the human military forces anymore.

- If a group of people is chased by mad guys or monsters and if there are women among the group, at least one woman will stumble and fall (to be picked up by a male group member).

1) car wheels also squeak on sand, grass and gravel.
2) EVERY fucking bomb has a huge-ass display on it, so everybody knows when it's going to go off. also, the bomb commando (or the hero) always manages to defuse the bomb just seconds before 0:00, which takes incredibly long.
3) every woman fleeing from a psychopath killer/ alien/ some sort of monster has to stumble and fall at least ONCE.
4) the demoman is always black. always.
5) every gun seems to have infinite amounts of ammo, as long as it's wielded by the good guys.

i'd really love to make a movie where every_freaking_cliché is used in an incredibly absurd way. so absurd that it, in fact, turns into awesomeness again. kinda like the naked gun, only more ridiculous. if that's even possible. dunno. *looks at spike*

Yes, but there are other particles that may slow down debris, although I'm not sure how much impact those have on bigger chuncks. Nevertheless gravity is way too low from an asteroid to pull any significantly sized rocks back.

Actually, there are state of the art techniques to recover image data from low detailed pictures. Have a sneak peak on one page I stumbled across some days ago. The recovered tank sequence is remarkable imho:

http://users.soe.ucsc.edu/~htakeda/kernelreg/kernelreg.htm

Also analysis in the fourier domain with gabor wavelets allows face recognition even on blurred, noisy or low resolution images.

Nevertheless, the way they show it on television is ridiculous, that is right ;-)

The trick with the enhancement is, that a video sequence contains
more information than a single picture.

Thus an assumed detail must generate a certain
reaction during the different videoshots, that a non existing detail would not.
So you can retreive a detail even when its not visible in
this resolution.

So some enhancement is possible.
