Probably due to the fact that you can't connect to the Minecraft account server. So the server doesn't recognize your name properly and does not give you permission to any commands.
Just a guess though.

In a hilarious twist, the Minecraft server was down because - wait for it - the fans were angry about the updateschedule. Kotaku's articleThis makes me speechless, almost. Really? That's the dumbest reason by far anyone could ever have for this. The great RockPaperShotgun links to this, which I haven't read yet. But it's RockPaperShotgun, so I trust their links. Probably a good article.
Perhaps this post will get me points for originality at least.
