Another stupid thread from me laugh

Why A8 don't have such good easy, terrain/world editor
as this one ?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVC3PeTELd0&hd=1

Notice, it's made under Dark Basic Pro, by a simple user !
So i ask myself, is it that very hard to add such terrain editor on WED ??? it is so closed or not easy to add plugins ?
I'm not programmer !

(And when will we be able to tweak the FOV angle on WED and MED, they are too much , they distort too much the scene and objects ! just my personnal opinion and taste !)

its possible, and if i am right, some people in this community have started leveleditor with more functions than this dark-basic terrain editor.
But i can't remember the names...... :-/

It's tweakable for many, many years, just right-click the 3D window and goto GLX Properties.

There have been users for GameStudio that have made tools somewhat like this (IceX, if I remember correctly). But think about this for a second. DarkBASIC did not release this. A user made the tool. Why doesn't GameStudio have such a tool? perhaps because a user should make one (and, as has been pointed out, some have done similar things in the past).

Conitec's position is to make a real-time 3D game engine and give you the BASIC tools to get a game made. For example, GameStudio includes MED, which is a very basic modeling tool. I would guess that many people choose to use another modeling tool and rely on MED merely to convert models to MDL (should they need to). And WED is a pretty basic level/environment editor. Now with the use of FBX files, I would suppose that most levels are being designed in other 3D applications and WED only being used to actually assemble all the assets into a game. Once again, Conitec's main concern is the actual engine, the scripting language that goes with it (Lite-C) and giving it's users access to that engine via basic tools (WED, MED, SED, etc).

I think you are right laugh

We can make a whole level in Blender or other 3D app indeed.
But terrain is a specific engine feature !
And it needs engine editor tools ; you'll loose lot lot fo time trying to make one in Blender than using Torque 3D or Unity integrated terrain editor where you can make a good terrain from nothing !
You have brushes for modifyng heigh , and brushes for multitexturing in real time , that's not comparable !
It's direct workflow !

Well i wanted to point terrain tools mainly !

That's sure for level editing you can make all in Blender;
the problem is you will not export 10 times the same rocks in A8. you ill import only one time and you'll have to
- duplicate
- adjust size/rotation/position in WED !
You can't import a whole level directly from Blender like that also !

watched half of the video(other half does not load for some reason, will watch it later).

I can make same editor(till the half of the video, but using the default multi texturing shader) in a weekend, let's say 4 days, add me being lazy to that, make it 1 to 1.5 weeks.

Challenge accepted.

RealSerious3D mentioned this level/terrain editing tool.

I can tell why someone made an editor for Dark Basic.

The package does not come with an editor. And importing is HORRIBLE.
So it is no fun at all trying to work without an editor. And if you can't find something to work with, you write your own tools.

I tried World Studio and others, but nothing really worked good. Either there were some wrong/distorted faces (Blender .x) or the shading was buggy (World Studio .dbo).

What I did was writing a direct MDL5 (A5 model format) importer and it worked great. better than anything I found for download laugh

Be happy that we have WED! And be more happy if Conitec decides to finally beef it up to more standard.
