Like I said, it's not that they're trying to hide the Wii's lack of processing power. It's just a visual style... Nintendo made Twilight Princess, and that game looked good. And now they're going for this new look, and it's purely a style change.

Quote:
What you get instead are textures which look like they're blurred or washed out in some way because you cannot create detailed textures like in Twilight Princess nor can you create highly unicolored textures like in Wind Waker.

The washed out colors are just part of the style. The whole game is meant to look like a watercolor painting. Not much detail, but plenty of color.

Well the question was as to why I don't like the graphics. I don't see the point you're trying to make with your answers. What has the art style to do with the visual outcome? If your hardware is too weak to make the visuals look good it's a bad idea to do it that way and that's what in my opinion is happening for Skyward Sword. In order to express that even more another image comparison:

The difference should be pretty obvious and even if the Skyward Sword image might get a bit polished there still are worlds between both pictures. Thanks to the cartoonish style Skyward Sword sacrifices any terms of noticeable lighting (while I admit it's a bit overdone on the TP image - I couldn't find a better forest setting one right now though). And there probably is no comment needed when it's about the trees (and their leaves). Although low poly they're very nice to look at in TP while in Skyward Sword you get big green splatters of ... well one might call it "green vomit"... wink

That has nothing to do with the art style itself anymore - it just doesn't look convincing in any way and is quite a step backwards. I'm ok with a different art style but I wouldn't enforce it if the outcome simply doesn't look good...

Now that you put this picture comparison, Skyward Sword looks even worse frown

I actually really hoped to see improved TP-like graphics for the new Zelda since TP eventually was a GC game...

Erf i have to stand on Spikes side here... I think the graphic looks really cool.

It's not about "awesome effects, realism, blabla" but the art style itself. It kinda has this watercolor effect to it and everything looks nice, smooth and fitting. It also reminds me a bit about Eternal Sonata.

So graphic wise i'm glad we have something different than TP or Wind Waker.
Not sure how the gameplay will be but so far i liked what i see. Yeah they use so much wii motion sensoring but it also looks like they have a high variety of items and systems.

When i first saw Twilight Princess on Wii, i wasn't sure if i'm going to like it using the wii mote to swing around my sword. In the end i loved it and i sometimes even was thinking "why didn't they make the sword swing the same way as i'm swinging my wiimote?).

Many people complained about the Wind Waker style too. I loved it, cell shading is awesome, and i'm glad they did it.

Looks nice, but the HUD is horribly huge. I really hope they'll change that somehow.

Yeah, but... Who is Lu?

the HUD is for the demo only, they confirmed that.

well, the style is give or take for most. i love it. i really do. its like nintendo planted a bug in my living room with the style.

thing is, the wii is not as weak as msot people think. i mean look at mario galaxy. the game wont look better on an HD console. it would have a higher resolution but everything else would look the same.
the lego titles look the same on wii as they do everywhere else.
so does de-blob 2.
the conduit proved wii can handle itself in the shooter department aswell, so does conduit 2 and so did goldeneye.
resident evil darkside chronicles looks amazingly stunning.

so its definately not the hardware they used to choose the style. and lets face it, we know NOTHING about the game. you dont know how theg ame turns out.
we heard snippets. nothing more. out of context sentences that could mean anything.

also, to be honest, i think that discussing the graphics here is kinda like comparing women. its a matter of taste, really. however detail wise, skyward sword owns twilight princess hard.
i, too can, choose nice pics and here are two:

Hyrule...

also hyrule...

look at the details. the new hyrule is once again a vast living world where everything works together to create a living piece of art. the TP hyrule is nice, but its empty. i mean play the game. the overworld is huge but most of it is empty fields. not even a bush for miles. just a few rocks and grass.

look at the trailers. in the new game, there is not one single scene where the environemtn is empty or bland. TP had a lot of bland scenes. like the horseback battle against the warg riders. elding bridge was pretty much a long block textured with a brick texture.

dont get me wrong, i love TP. i ranked it amongst my favourite zelda games.
but skyward sword has much more detail. it may be hard to spot for someone who dislikes the graphics style, but believe me, the detail is there. it just blends better with the environemnt.

you can quote me on that: i bet you in ten years, people will regard Skyward Sword as one of the most visually appealing games of this generation. and rightfully so. it is a piece of art in itself.

lastly, look at those unrelated pics and tell me you do not think they look georgeous:

I like the graphics, not better than twilight, but at least equal. I can see the style there going for, in a way, it seems like there is cooler enemies and the such too! Sometimes this is only possible with a graphics style like this. laugh

Definitely looking forward to this one. Maybe more than Twilight in some ways because it looks a bit different.

@Spike:
Well I just thought about writing a longer post now and disprove most of your arguments but I don't really want to argue right now. So just two small comments:

Quote:
we heard snippets. nothing more. out of context sentences that could mean anything.

Yet again in case you didn't read it. You could play a part of a forest section on Gamescom. So I don't rely just on the screens and trailers...

Quote:

i, too can, choose nice pics and here are two:

a)
Well this pretty much is a nonsensual image comparison. You're comparing two totally different things which is Hyrule Fields with a Deku Tree or whatever this is forest section. You need to compare two somewhat similar settings together with a somewhat comparable camera angle. And "detail wise" I don't see Skyward Sword ever getting the upper hand as the more cartoonish style takes away many many details both in textures as well as lighting (see also pics below)...

b)
Well if you think the trees look decent (especially when being compared to TP) I guess the discussion ends here. They look plain horrible and that has nothing to do with the art style. They just made some huge plain areas where they roughly painted some leaves on. It's a joke compared to what TP had and that has nothing to do with art style. Hell there even are no alpha parts so you can see through them now and then - just some giant, hardly textured polygons attached to a tree. It already looks bad on the pictures but when you get close to those trees it's even worse. I'll end this discussion with a couple of additional pictures showing my point...

Oh but wait - I have a final question. Is the last picture you posted available as poster or high-res image? It looks awesome and I'm look for something to cover a white wall of mine... laugh
