one of our Profs at school informed us about the autodesk education project, where you can get the autodesk programms as a student for free. The only requirement is a registered e-mail-adress at your university.

It is not allowed to use these versions for commercial projects, but I think its a good chance to get a good and legal impression of the programs for a longer time than 30 days.
I dont know if there are any limitations in the usability for the programs which seems to be more interesting for the community here (like maya). I just know that there is a water mark in the drawings you create with cad programs.
