We're pleased to announce the release of the latest version of the multiplayer shooter CSiS - Combat Simulation System 0.50.
Many months have passed since the first Public Playtest in October 2010 and we can assure you, the team has not been lazy. We have looked at all the data you have shared with us during this first test phase and made CSiS stronger, more stable, more fun. But this release is so much more than just bugfixes, it is stuffed to the top with new features, which are so numerous that we cannot possibly tell you everything we have done. To wet your appetite, we have selected the 7 most outstanding features. CSiS 0.50 ships with:

  • a complete new ice world filled with frozen asteroids, icy gases and spine-chilling effects.
  • as requested, we added a tutorial level to make you familiar with your ship and its systems. learn how to defeat your enemies in no time!
  • dedicated server support with a handy auto-rehosting option in the event of a hard application crash. CLI support for weaker machines.
  • BOT support for the full 16 player CSiS experience, even if you could not convince 16 of your friends to play our game with you.
  • two new team game modes - team deathmatch and capture the station. prepare to be blown away!
  • a great new set of soundtrack files made by our new incredibly talented composer Francesco Di Buono. but if you prefer to listen to your own files, CSiS 0.50 ships with soundtrack support for music files on your hard drive as well.
  • revisited shaders with support for the latest state-of-the-art anti aliasing, shadow mapping, lighting and transparency effects.

Download:

CSiS 0.50 is completely free to play and represents yet another major milestone in our development cycle. download a copy today and join one of the servers we have running.
http://csis-game.net/pages/cargo-bay.php
(Unpack and then double click CSiSInstall.exe to install. We used .7z to pack it because of limited space and smaller downloads. Recommended tools to unpack: Win-rar or .7zip. For those of you with limited download capacity, I'm willing to burn CDs and ship them to you if you pm me.)
The Team will try to host a minimum of 2 servers day and night for the first 5 days. But of course you are free to (and we would certainly appreciate if you would) host your own. We have servers only running in Europe at the moment, if someone in the USA could host one as well, we'd be very thankful.

Request:
Please post bugs, errors, suggestions, rants, critique and praise either at our Forum or here, or feel free to drop us a mail/pm if you need support to host a server.

See you online!

Note for people trying to host a dedicated server:
In most cases, you can simply use the CSiS.exe and click "host", then choose "dedicated server". If you want to join your own internet server from behind the same router, you might have to enter the IP address manually on the client when you see the serverlist.
Please use the rehosting feature (type 'yes') and try the bot_min command (type help bot_min in the console after startup).
Also, don't forget to forward port 5556 to the correct PC in your LAN and allow all the logger and engine files (up to three binaries) to communicate through your firewall.
(on some PCs you may need to start the game, close it down (use the shutdown command) allow all the files through your firewall, and then rehost).
For further info, see the help files or pm me.

We decided to take the servers down again: We've gotten enough feedback, reports and will try to release a bug fix in a few days, we're working hard on fixing things.
Thanks a lot for everyone who tried! Of course you can always still host your server (LAN or net) or ask me if you want a server setup, I can host again for a few hours.

If you want to try the fix (won't make any promises, but hopefully within the next 7 days) I recommend keeping the files, there will be a smaller update download.

Many thanks to everyone one who tried it!
And special thanks to Schokokeks for keeping your server up and running for so long! If every you need someone to host a server for your game, feel free to ask.

I believe I have fixed the tutorial bug.
Can someone who has experienced the bug confirm please:
- the crash happened when re-entering the buy screen after the bots had been released onto the map (for the first time)
- you killed at least one of the bots a few seconds before the buy screen was restarted.

[blackmail]If no one confirms, I'll call the bug solved till anyone tells me otherwise[/blackmail]

Bugfixing went very well lately, we hope to release a bugfix release very soon.

Excellent game. Game only crashed once and the graphics are really good.
Here is my report:
-I wish there were more maps maybe a nebula map, pink yellow, etc
(I know that more will likely be added thats just a suggestion)
-Bug when you get killed by armed drone in tutorial (game crashes)
-When you hit an object such as an asteroid suicide is spelled wrong
-Excellent graphics and gameplay
-Game only crashed once and I was able to host and play with friends
-Really entertaining

Awesome, thanks a lot for testing!
- Maps are coming. we have 10 planned, let's see how far we get with those. Cool thing is: All game modes will be programmed in such a way that they can easily work on each map. So the next step is adding more levels and two more gameplay modes.
- Haha, so many people have played the game and you're the first one to notice a typo? Awesome. I'll check it out as soon as I have booted my windows later on today.
- Tutorial bug is already fixed, it'll be working in the next update, I believe.

To everyone who's interested: We've been fixing tons of bugs lately. Mostly wrong array indices or bad pointers due to the complex removal process of entities in a multiplayer game (when shot, make ship and guns invisible, remove guns and remove flashing lights on ship, remove gun's muzzleflashes, send the "dead" skill over to the other clients. If a client is currently in the process of synchronizing because he just joined, do not remove entity before he has a) created the entity in full and b) gotten the dead flag, then wait for all clients to remove their guns, muzzle flashes, flashing lights, shield effects, then finally remove the entity). So it wasn't one or two big errors that kept crashing the game, it was around 5 or 6 smaller ones that would occur on the wrong timing. I know of two more that are currently still happening, one in the level restart and one in the wingmen function. Trouble is, I cannot recreate them. I've had the game running for hours yesterday afternoon without a single crash, with multiple bots fighting (one time I even forced all bots to buy wingmen every time they spawn -> the game ran for 2.5 hours straight before I closed it down manually.)

Bottom line is: I might bring out a new version these days and ask you guys to help me debug it by just playing and sending me bug reports...

New CSiS Version is up and ready for download. Download the update or full version here. (Update is 9 MB, .7z. Please scroll down to see the update. Only works if you have 0.50 installed. Otherwise install the full version, which is also available on the same site.)

To see a complete list of changes, see this page.

Important!
This release fixes most of the bugs you have reported. Thank you at this point to everyone who did so!
Still, it is not bug free. In fact, I know of some bugs that do still occur, but which I cannot recreate with my number of computers or in reasonable time. This is why I really need you to report after every (!) crash. Use the Crash Reporter (found in your start menu after installation) to report bugs.
You can also see the information sent to us in your reports folder in Appdata\CSiS\Reports if you're curious.

I will be hosting servers starting tomorrow. Now I need to get some sleep.

Having a problem before I even started the game: Where is 1440x900 as resolution? D:

Edit: The game seems to use 1440x900 though... Next problem: No server D:

Sorry, we messed something up in the process of adding a resolution someone requested.
If you chose 1400*900, that's actually 1440*900... it was simply a typo.

The complete list of resolutions:
1=1280x720, 2=1024x768, 3= 1366x768, 4= 1280x800, 5= 1440x900, 6=1600x900, 7= 1280x960, 8= 1280x1024, 9= 1400x1050, 10= 1680x1050, 11= 1920x1080, 12=1920x1200

Does the update work for everyone? I got a report from a team member who's had troubles, it installed fine but then the game didn't start he said.
But I tested again, 0.50->0.51 update works like a charm for me...

Fixed the link above to point to the right changelog.

Edit: JustSid seems to have had the same error as our team member has had, when updating. Anyone else?

We'll have servers running tonight.
