this is fun but don't google the answer. laugh

Quote:
Here’s a classic puzzle: you are a rather evil King. You have 1000 bottles of wine. Exactly one is poisoned. You need to find out which one. You have 10 prisoners. You can use them to test the wine.
Now, to make the problem more difficult: poison takes effect only after 10 hours, and you need to find the poisoned bottle within a day. (If the poison worked instantly, you could easily find the poisoned bottle by making just one prisoners test them all one by one. If you had unlimited time, you could cut the number of bottles in half while using just one prisoner by making him test half of the bottles, and it would be enough with 10 to find the right one. But you do not have time for this.)

@ventilator: Groovy! I think I've got it:
Click to reveal..
With 10 prisoners we've effectively got 10 bits. One prisoner samples every second bottle. Prisoner 2 skips 2 then samples 2, then skips 2, and so on. The pattern continues:
- 1: even bottles only
- 2: groups of 2
- 3: groups of 4
- 4: groups of 8
- 5: groups of 16
- 6: groups of 32
- 7: groups of 64
- 8: groups of 128
- 9: groups of 256
- 10: groups of 512

Depending on who dies, we get a binary number from 0 to 1023 (although it should only get up to 999). If we've numbered the bottles accordingly, that's how we know which is poisoned).

Its extremely simple to solve this, chop the balls of everyone in my realm until they tell me which one is poisoned. Then let the one who told me which one is poisoned drink the poisoned bottle and look if he dies. If he doesn't I will torture and kill him, and then wait in a bush during his funeral and kill everyone who comes.

Cheers laugh I'd like to see yours. Is it

time-based? Like, assuming the time of death was pretty precise, you could assign each prisoner 100 bottles to sample, and they'd sample one every 5 minutes. That'd take 495 minutes, or between 8 and 9 hours, leaving plenty of time to wait up to another 10 hours, see who dies and when, and get rid of the bottle he drank 10 hours prior (or give it to all the other prisoners, since we're rather evil).

yes, my idea is time-based but a bit different. time wouldn't have to be that exact with mine.

Considering the available time of one day and the time of 10 hours until reaction shows....

I have 24-10 = 14 hours of time to test the wine with my prisoners.
14*3600 / 1000 = ~50 seconds per bottle for a singl evictim.

In order to make the result more clear I need more time per bottle, otherwise the result might fail as a time difference less than one minute means the poison would need to react very precisely.
Since my underlings hate me for being the coolest bad ass king around, I'm sure they sneakily mixed up some more poison variants and the duration until the effect takes place might now vary based on temperature or whatever. I need a better time scale.

But since I have 10 prisoners which were arrested because I did not like their faces, I distribute the bottles on all 10 prisoners, making it for each prisoner about 8 minutes as maximum time frame between each drink. (100 bottles in 14 hours).

Let's make it 5 minutes per drink and I'll have enough time to make my prisoners sort and number all the bottles before.
Now I just need to keep track until one of this scum collapses. By counting the minutes backwards I can find out which bottle was poisoned and offer it generously to my remaining prisoners.

Now we'll go partying in town and burn all houses down, grabbing all gold, money and food, and then we'll return to castle and have a huge banquet with all the food we just robbed... and there are still 999 bottles of wine to be drunk, as most of them will be open now.

Next time I'll just send my guards down to village to bring more prisoners.

Hiya guys.
Ive come up with couple of other possible solutions.

1> Empty ALL the bottles into a huge vat. Stir well.
Pour the contents of the vat back into the bottles and re-cork them.
The poison SHOULD be safely diluted.
You can test this on the prisoners by giving them a whole bottle to share.
(assuming you didnt drown them in the full vat just for kicks)

2> Depending on HOW evil your ruler is...
Test 20 bottles with the prisoners in one of the suggested methods.
If NONE die, keep those bottles for your PERSONAL USE, and host the party.
If one does die, grab 20 UNOPENED bottles from the untested 980 for yourself,
and put the 20 tested ones back into the pile.
(Who really cares if you lose a few minions here and there, eh?)
