This is a compilation list featuring useful reference sites, quality programs and tools, and services that are ideal for the indie developer on a tight budget.

Bolded items are programs worth checking out first. This is based on my opinion, as well as others but they are very nice and do what they do very well.

While compiling this list, I ran across that Credo(Lifeforms) program. I hadn't been to their site in a while and that's a new product. There's another one with some useful looking motions, too, so I learned a little today. I updated the list just now...a few more essential goodies(or at least helpful).

Yep, it's nice but a little pricey. I tried to include program that were either free or very cheap. The most expensive thing on it is Silo which is $109 and Paintshop Pro($125 give or take). Silo is similar to the free Wings, and PSP is like Photoshop(basically) and you've got the free GIMP and Dogwaffle, so there's something for everyone.

A few more additions and clarifications added. If I add anything else and my edit time window is expired, then I'll just redo the whole list in any future posts. That will eliminate random links all over the place if the thread grows to a longer length.

Yet a few more additions. Inkscape, Paint.NET, UVMapper, Molebox, SubtitlesK5ky, Tattoo, AC3D, MarbleCLAY. The Dogwaffle link now points to the free version page instead of the commercial version. Moved a few things around and clarified some descriptions, renamed the thread. My edit time has now expired, so no more changes unless something really cool pops up and is appropriate for it.

I also added a small handful of these to the freetools section of the Wiki.

I think the most important marketing tool starving indies can have is a good web site so perhaps you can include the better free opensource CMS and ecommerce solutions. We are using tikiwiki, http://www.tikiwiki.org, and oscommerce, http://www.oscommerce.org. Using a content-management system frees developers from spending too much time updating and implementing their website architecture so there is more time to put up content
