Fragmotion is one of the best tools out there. Never invested this few bucks better.

Or try Milkshape.

If you have a few models you cant convert, but want to, let me know via pm

fbx does not support vertex animation, thus can't be used in Unity, I tried too laugh

I could write you a tool that takes your vertex animated MDL model and places at each vertex a free floating bone, that moves the vertex then, saved again as a MDL. This is sort of a hack, but it might work for your old models.

Hm, not really. I am working on a DLL that can load, save and mofify MDL7 models. Animation frames aren't supported yet and all I would have to do is working them out (for both vertex and bone animation); creating and attaching bones work already, by the way, so, it is not as much work as I would have to do if I would have nothing. The tool itself would be written in Lite-C and would be a snap.

but maybe that hacked model won't be the best for performance tests with so many bones...
imo a better and more simple approach would be to test real bone animated models, there are a couple of free ones for Unity, and they could be converted to mdl for exact comparison.
I'm also testing Unity again, because it has definitely a lot of good properties, e.g. its terrain system.
