http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/07/10/the-ouya-a-99-open-hackable-console

What do you guys think about it, esp. for us indie developers?

Might as well post the Kickstarter link here:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ouya/ouya-a-new-kind-of-video-game-console

The article you posts says:

"That is, of course, if Ouya's kickstarter makes its goal of $950,000 on Kickstarter."

Considering that they are not well OVER $4 million (with 25 days to go), then, yes, they made their goal. In fact, if I remember correctly, I think they made their goal in about 8 hours!

I am excited about the Ouya and think that it is great for developers, too.

Well, yes, that's what the article says, but it contains updated information on the top of the article, too:

Quote:
Update: In less than twelve hours, Ouya has reached its funding goal of $950,000 on Kickstarter. So what now? We reached out to Julie Urhman, founder and CEO of Ouya, for comment. She said:

"We were totally psyched to reach our goal at 2pm. It took us 7 months to raise a little bit of investment from generous friends and family, and we raised the rest on Kickstarter in 7 hours. We are just floored. We thank the 8,000 backers who have supported us so far, and the rest yet to come. The next 29 days are about raising the bar: how much can we change things? We're going to hang on tight for the ride!"

I'm excited, too, and eager to know how it will work out.

I'm a big fan of this concept. It's a unified platform with standardized controllers and hardware, there are so many advantages and possiblities in that! Let's hope they get this right and it doesn't take too long to get it to market, else it'll be outdated on release.

I'd love to develop for this and already send them a email asking how to get early access to their sdk and developer kits, non answer yet but they probably won't be able to answer all emails they get. In their current update on kickstarter, they write:

Quote:
And we had a crazy idea—if folks are interested—we might consider a reward that would allow devs to start working from the raw circuit board at an even earlier date, allowing them to get a head start on development. And maybe we’d add one more level that gives you just the software—no early console. Tell us what you think

(Obviously, if you have the Android SDK, you know most of what you need to know -- we’ll just need to add in a few elements specific to OUYA—things like assets for promoting on the console and our payments API.)

Also, Unity engine will probably support this, and since i got the free android version when they gave it away, I guess I'll be trying out unity soon.

I think like some article i've red, lot of people are becoming borred from all repetitive violent AAA games.
Nothing very new ...

Lot of us like a lot the indie market because of very innovative titles, or games lot more based on gameplay ,fun, entertainment than last graphics.

Like the old days of CPC 464 computer, Amiga , where a lot was in the gameplay laugh
I prefer less graphical incredible, but even little games that makes you don't stop playing them could it be arcade, RPG or any other game.

This console is promising indeed, i'll hope to find some SNES emulators or Neo Geo to play old games also laugh
Gaemloft Games are really well made like Dungeon Hunter 2 and other titles ... and mobile games are a lot.
The advantages :
- Lot lot of games at launch, because it's mobile games
- Games needing less years to produce, so more coming out
- Original games
- Low price, so you can buy lot more games
- I think you will be able to develop games for it with your PC laugh (perhaps sell some games also)

3DGS don't still have any mobile solution ?? Too Bad ...:(

It's an interesting project and if I had a credit card I probably would support it. In my opinion they should wait for the Tegra Wayne though which if there are no problems will get released this year (so an Ouya in H1/2013 with that chip should be no problem). It would increase the power behind that systems by magnitudes, most certainly wouldn't cost THAT much more and the Ouya also wouldn't be sort of outdated at release. That also should make it up-to-date for quite some time as there will be no better production process in the near future than the Wayne's 28nm one and thus there'll be no huge performance increases with newer chips (more performance via higher consumption isn't very likely to happen) for quite some time...

Welol if they would target power, yes they should wait ...
But the goal is very different from power, if you need power, just buy some PS3 or X360 fomr some player laugh
No , here it's not super graphics target, it's lot more simple but very well done graphics.
And lo more games, easy to produce because less graphics advanced.

I don't think the console will be outdated at all, caus it targets , not graphics, not next mobiles challenging, but simple mobile games.

The price is really ok also laugh

Well look what it gets advertised with mostly. It's usually those Tegra 3 games which look pretty good. The thing is upon its release the Tegra 4 should be around which will be provide a peformance which is going to be a lot higher (I don't know if there already exist final specs but it's said to be several times faster). I think Ouya shouldn't miss this opportunity or many people will start staying - well that thing isn't too bad but my phone / tablet is more powerful. Plus there most certainly won't be another performance leap like that around for some time. In addition to that - it's still a Tegra processor so it's just like a newer revision of what they're already using. I think it would help as I guess some of the advertised Tegra 3 games might get problems running fluidly at the promised 720p on the TV...

You're right that graphics aren't the core feature here but this is just about few weeks / months of waiting for a huge performane leap and being able to feature the latest Tegra 4 games in the next years...

Well what I heard they got help by NVIDIA in terms of "optimizing" their hardware base so maybe they'll crank up the clocks of the processor a bit... wink

That's the point : the main games will not be to challenge AAA titles.
Console games runs in high defintion with lot ot details, the goal is not also to challenge next incoming Ipad mini, Ipdad 3 ,iPad 4 etc ... this is not the goal laugh

Here this is indie low price games on your TV for a very low price console laugh
(even if i find somewhat the price hight for some mobile system to TV only)

The goal is indie games, not specially with high 3D graphics as we see like Nova 3 game and what will come next ... this style of game like Nova 3 is trying to challenge Console AAA titles.
The console goal won't be challenge, but low price games, 2D fun entertaining games, 3D simple games etc ...

And a potential big market of games, caus lot of indies will be able to publish for this console laugh
Lot of little studios (even big ones doing AAA titles) could make great games for this console and publish a lot.

Perhaps it will be some sort of PSX come back style laugh
Lot of different game, some big productions, and very well done games taking profit of the limitations of the hardware.

Resident evil series with 2D pre rendered background and 3D characters, FF7 and next episodes, Dyno Crysis, Driver 2, Gran Turismo 2 , tekken 3, Vagrant Story,Chrono Cross, MSG,
Castelvania, Sokuiden 2, Ico etc ...
Lot of this type of games could be done in this console without too much power needing, and could have improved 3D graphics ...
That with a good bunch of great indie games, and innovative ones , like retro remake games laugh

It's a long time to wait for it ...
