What do you think creates a scary atmosphere or is generally scary?

I played recently the new horror masterpiece Outlast and I am really inspired and turned on by it!

But I also pied my pants with "the fourth kind" (I think it is a lot scarier then paranormal activity) and those Japanese ghost stories: sample.

However I found this great doku about creepiness:
doku

In outlast its simply the perfect shadows and lightning.
The enemies are dumb like the KI in BF4 singleplayer which means very dumb^^
However bugs in any way will destroy the gameplay, especially in horror-games.

i think the most important part is to play with the players expectations.
sometimes you just know that something must happen. so when it happens you are not that much scared then when something happens you don't think of.

but also i don't think jump-scares are the right way. because if you use them too much, they will be annoying or destroy the athmosphere, if you use just one or two when you expect them at least they will add some athmosphere

also light and shadows are really important. you always feel unsure if it's dark and if you use light to give the player safty, you can use non-existing light to create fear.

just my two cents
