I've seen many people requesting dynamic shadows for levels. However, I think this may be possible. I'm not sure since I only own Standard (no dynamic shadows) but the reason I suspect it is possible is because when I add map entities to my level, I notice a greyed out checkbox for "shadow" in the map entity's properties. Could someone with Commercial or Professional please confirm or refute that map entities can cast dynamic shadows? Because if they can, people can stop requesting that feature; it already exists. For example, if you want a building to cast a dynamic shadow, create the building in a separate file, build the level, and then load the building as a map entity in the larger level.

Note however that I have all along suspected that people simply don't know how to create sun shadows with static lighting. After all, there are exactly two situations in which you need a dynamic shadow: if the building moves, or if the sun moves. In the former case, you'ld need a map entity anyway so that's a non-issue. Meanwhile the latter case is fairly uncommon in games; day-night transitions (such as Ambit is working on) are the only example which come to mind.

Thus, if you don't need a dynamic shadow for your building, it is easy to add a static shadow to the level. Just make sure to set "Sun" appropriately in the Map Properties (same place you load a script for the level.) Note that the sun set in WED for level geometry is unrelated to the sun set in script for models. Thus, you'll need to set both so that the lighting in your game will look consistent.

Anyone? I'm really curious now. I've been considering upgrading to Commercial in a couple months; if map entities cast dynamic shadows, I may decide to upgrade even sooner than that.

Map entities do not cast shadows.

Oh well, too bad. I wonder why it includes a checkbox for shadows in a map entity's properties?

The SHADOW check box is more MDL model entities and it turns on a sort of shadow for these models that moves as the model does. But these shadows are a fake. If the player stands on a ledge, the shadow will continue in a straight line off the ledge and will not be clipped. If the player stands next to a wall, the shadow will disappear into the wall and will not "bend" onto the wall, etc.

If you do have a A5 version that suports Dynamic Shadows how do you put them in? is there a pre-defined script that lets you do that, or how is it done?

Hi Drow Interactive,

In your player code you have something like this, My.shadow=on; // enable the shadow.

Or just check shadow in preferences to turn on dynamic shadows for models.

Yeah, I noticed that the shadows are faked in the Techdemo. I am so tempted to post in the Future forum that they really need shadow volumes (so that the shadows will be cast properly on walls etc.) but I know they must get this specific request at least twice a day.

Uh, by "faked" I was using your use of the term from an earlier post. You referred to how the shadow is not clipped by the wall, extends off ledges, etc. This is clearly visible in the Techdemo (especially on the uneven terrain of the Weather Room.)
