The Lotter-Effect

The Lotter-Effect has been done in under 12 hours over night for the Overnight Contest of the Dusmania 10 in July 2008 and due to it's gameplay and it's quality it won the 1st prize! The Dusmania is an anually amateur's game developer event exchanging experiences and encouragement of young talents.

SYNOPSIS

The Lotter-Effect is about a little boy called Lotti who has decided to jump up into the sky to reach the pot of gold at the end of the big rainbow he saw today. It's up to you to help them get as high as possible without falling down, and collect extra coins while flying higher and higher.

This is a fun and short, yet addictive game where your only goal is to gain as much score as possible while reaching the golden pot at the end of the rainbow. The game includes three stages with increasing difficulty: moving and static clouds, birds and even asteroids will make it difficult for our little Lotti to give him what he is starving for: the gold – and the rainbow.

THE FEATURES

  • 3 stages: "San Diego", "Dieburg" and "Ronneburg"
  • crazy character animations
  • different locations per stage: ground, mid-air, moon area, hemisphere, space, near planet area, far planet area
  • increasing difficulty: first clouds are static, then they move (horizontally, vertically, diagonally, in a circle and diagonally) and finally there are obstacles like birds and asteroids
  • pure casual gaming: no guidance nor explanations are needed

DEVELOPMENT NOTES

Like the year before, there was an Overnight Contest at the Dusmania 10 in Summer 2008. In 2007 we won with "Trixie in Fairyland" the third prize, so there were enough reasons, why we should continue taking part in that competition. This year, we did'nt get a framework nor graphics for the contest, but a motto (or leitmotif or whatever): "rainbow".

Sven Paroth aka "Kiyaku" (who joined Spike and me last year, too) and I wanted to make something nice to play and we came very fast to the game idea we needed for the Lotter-Effect. We both worked over 12 hours to make the game. Even after one hour we got a working prototype of the player movement and we saw very early, that the game is fun!

C&C are welcome!

Downloading now! Congrats on your prize! It looks fun, just because there isn't tons of violence and cursing doesn't mean I can't enjoying it (in most games most of the language comes from my mouth anyway).

lol kinda fun. "take care of birds" in english means either "kill the birdies" or "look after them", so i expected to be getting points for knocking them out the sky.

nice work anyway, especially for such a short dev-time.

Congratulation for winning the first prize! I played this "Lottery" but gave up at the second stage though it looks very well done.

I have 2 questions:
You wrote in your post that it took you under 12 hours and then at the end of this post you write it took over 12 hours. Does "over" mean "more than" or just the time span of "under" 12 hours? I am confused wink

My second question is: How are the rules? Are you allowed to use some prepared elements for this contest? So lets say you already prepared some graphics, code libraries and similar at home to get more done within the 12 hours?

Regards,
Frank

Thanks for all your nice answers smile

@Frank:
Actually we needed ~12 hours, a bit less smile last year we got a framework to use and some premade graphics which we have to use (to make sure that the game is done over night). Though, we asked if we can use Gamestudio and because they agreed, we made Trixie. This year the choice of the toolkit was free and we got no premade graphics. So this was less restrictive and maybe also the reason why so much good games entered the contest. The only restriction was that the game has to deal with rainbows.

The contest began at ~ 2 PM on Saturday and ended at 10 AM on Sunday. So, in fact you had a span of 20 hours if you needed them.

Bye,
Chris
