The Disenfranchised

The Disenfranchised is a Film Noir adventure game presented in glorious black & white and set in a 1930s urban setting. You'll have your choice of direct control or point & click movement, as well as many other standard customizations.

The game will feature a mature story unfolding over the course of one night in the life of a down on his luck gangster. The dialogue is presented in the original mafia slang from the period; a portion of which features narration from the main character as he struggles to make sense of the world and situations around him.

There is no release date, and as they say it'll be done when it's done.

All screens shown are strictly work in progress.

Looks fantastic.

Have you thought of adding the occaisional coloured object?
I dont mean I dont like black and white look, the contrary.
I just think it might be an interesting effect to add a few objects with colour.
Perhaps as a clue or highlight etc.

i see what he means... like have a woman wearing red lipstick. have everything be in black and white except the red lipstick. it could act as symbolism or foreshadowing.

Yea like that sin city movie, or that show where the dude sees in black and white and things that are important show up in color. I was reading about this in an art book where there was a black and white picture of a back yard and there was a non descript bush with a single small red flower on it.

I like the game black and white though, I think it is original and sureal and very artsy-fartsy. Great idea!

It's been done, so no tiny splashes of color here and there. wink New adventure title The Lost Crown does this (from the creator of the Dark Fall games, Jonathon Boakes and a one one man show found in any retail store).

Hi,

I checked that game out, thats nice, I didnt realise the wintermute engine could do things at angles like that.

Wintermute is a good engine for making quick small games that could be used as 'serious games' (hate that word) on a budget.

Hope to see more of your Disenfranchised project soon! I love these types of games.

For a moment I thought you were talking about my title and Wintermute, but then all I had to do was look up. Lost Crown is actually all 2D I think. I can't remember if the characters are models or not, but the backgrounds aren't realtime. Wintermute is a 2D engine mainly, but it can and is the only publically available adventure game engine that can also load 3D objects; thus the 2.5D modern adventure game. You can make any size game with Wintermute whether it be those fast and small ones you mentioned or something more ambitious like a professional game. It just comes down to all the same prerequisates to do the same with 3DGS. wink

WME is free now, though so no more pay per title expense, and you can use Blender and the export plugin and a free paint program like Gimp or Paint.NET for your graphics, so in essence you could make an entire point and click adv. title for nothing (minus labor) using those 3 pieces of software. My title was a WME game a couple times. I would like to use it someday. I might wait until the new editors are implemented, though.

I went through the tutorials for wintermute over the weekend,
it seems fairly easy to make something basic (bar the time taken on the graphics).

I also like the fact that you can parallax the layers to achieve a 3d scrolling effect.

I just watched the intro sequence to the lost crown and the characters sometime seemed 3d (not the fmvs), I dont know though. I actually grew up near where the game is based in East Anglia and its quite evocative of that weird place.

You see I should have a small historical low budget educational 'game' to do this month for a client. I decided to go with 2.5d as I could not get something such as the Cadiz project or even less than that done on that time and budget.

Some may argue its old out of date technology, but I would argue especially for educational games trying to direct the user to a certain extent it is a good method.

I will try to post some things up in 'other engines' etc if my client will allow me to eventually.

I just remember the game Zak Mckraken ages ago remembering it was a fun game, I looked at the graphics the other day and they were so basic, so the gameplay/storyline must have been good!

It's not out of date technology, it's just a different way of doing things. Since when is full 3D the standard and only way of doing something? wink How about those 2D games? Old school side scrollers are making a come back. The next Mega Man is done in the original 8-bit style. It looks great and should be hard as hell like it's predecessors. laugh Anyway, sales of 2.5D adventures are doing well. They wouldn't turning them out in record numbers (when put into historical context) if there wasn't some profit to be made. There's plenty of crap being released, but the same can be said for the "standard" too.
