MapBuilder 2

MapBuilder Editor has arrived to a new stage. Beside keeping it a lightweight editor, a lot of new features are packed into it, extending the old system with support of 3D Game Studio A8 Commercial/pro edition (object shaders, decals, pssm shadows, shade-c 0.91 water shader and shadowmapping, post processing shaders). This way Free and Extra users can experience with the possibilities of Commercial edition, or can choose to limit options to the basic engine functionalities, to utilize only compatible features during level design time.

MapBuilder now offers static lightmapping for all the engine editions, and a completely new, vegetation and texture package, to achieve both quality and performance, optimized for 3D Game Studio A8. Level testing also features some weather effects now, to see at design time how performance changes in case of many snow or rain particles.

At the download page you can find the version history mentioning all the important improvements done on each update, just shortly:
- From version 2.2 MapBuilder is open source, and features improved pssm shadows, shade-c based shadowmapping and water shaders, new shadow and water editors.
- Update 2.21 provided some wmb saving/loading improvements.
- In version 2.3 the source code is completely reorganized, the terrain editor is reworked, entity modification is more flexible, it has much better entity seeding options, offers two camera modes.
- Update 2.32 includes two example projects using the editor source directly covering various ways of level loading, and a 4 level mini shooter game with our favourite wizards.
- Version 2.4 features improved shadowmapping, rewritten shader package, improved water, more flexible lightmap usage, fixed nexus and memory handling.

So, as sivan asked me, here is my feedback. I collect them in cca. 15 minutes, it is not exhaustive.

1. On your opening screen your name is Ivan Summer, but on your web page the is claimed as Ivan Stummer. One of them is false.

2. If use the Reset button in the Settings, it always switches the application from windowed to full screen.

3. In Load Level the up and down buttons of the scrollbar don't work. Maybe if there are more than 8 level they will work, i didn't try it.

4. I can not leave the Test mode. To do it i have to close the application.

5. In Test mode. I can not toggle the Help.

6. In Test mode. While the soldier is in the window the camera movement is slightly slower than that is out.

7. In Test mode. When the mouse cursor is not in the window, i can move the soldier, but i can't move the camera. IMHO one of them is bad.

8. In Test mode. I can not stop the weather effects with 0. Notice that, i use hungarian 101 keyboard, where 0 is left from the 1.
When i use, the button right from the 9, the stop works.

9. I loaded into the mapbuilder2_level.wmb. After the loading, i can not see the name of level nowhere.
This is an important information, it should display.

10. At this stage, i reviewed the shadows. They are terrible!
Maybe the reason is my computer setup, i will give the data of my machine at the end of the post.
There are random shadows their shapes are different as the owner object's shapes.
As i move the camera, the shadow shapes are changing. Once they get proper shape, other times they get different bad shapes.
There are shadows without owner object.

These were my first experiences. My first impression is that, the application is cool, handy, useful.
When these issues will be fixed, and the others, it will be a really good tool.

My rig contains the following main items:
- OS: Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate
- MB: Asus sAM3 M4A87TD EVO
- CPU: Phenom II X6 1090T
- Mem: DDR3 Corsair XMS3 KIT 8GB 1333MHZ (2x4GB)
- VGA: Radeon HD 6950 2GB
- other, in this case not so important things...

1. thanks. I always say I can't write laugh
2. it is okay, the default settings are read from a file I created, not to startup settings.
3. yes, it works only if there are more pages, no reason to scroll if less.
4. strange, never had this problem. just press F12, or any similar menu button F1-F12.
5. yes true, press F12, ESC, and T again. but will be done.
6. it is FPS dependent. especially when stencil shadow used, FPS drops a lot because of the soldier (a bit too high poly).
7. I know, it is because soldier movement is done within playertest01.c and not in uihandling.c where inputs allowed only when mouse is within MapBuilder window. I found it not important.
8. yes, I use Hungarian keyboard too, so please press ö as you mentioned. this is because of engine functions. maybe there is a workaround, but to be honest have not spent enough time with it to find until now. please note, the same is valid for z-y buttons. should be solved once...
9. press F9 for level settings, there must be displayed.
10. what kind of shadows you mean? (shadow_stencil value) if you press alt tab in fullscreen mode, and come back later, pssm shadows get buggy like you wrote. it can be avoided if you switch them off by ctrl q, and on by the same when you come back. it is an engine related problem. the shade-c shadowmapping must work.

many thanks for the feedback, furtunately they are not so serious problems laugh

This is awesome sivan, deepest gratz and respect, lovely visuals and so easy to play with, I'm more than half a mind to build with this whist I'm developing with a competitor product because I love GStudio but all this work that you've done just wasnt available for my limited grasp of programing previously, even though GED is available.

Don't know why I played with GED and left it for for hard work in WED.

Please don't act like MS or other company that don't care with issue feedbacks, just develop new and newer features.
You can say these are minor problems. I admit yes, they are that, but you should care with them and solve them.
I am a software developer, i work long since in the IT industry, you can trust me.

The 10. issue is the most serious. Just try it in 1024x768 windowed mode. When you move the camera, and don't do any other, you will see the shadows are buggy.

I see you are a very analytic person who cares details, thus a good tester. Sorry if my style was similar to MS. It was just a fast response last night after I tested a great quince spirit at a friend (a real authentic Hungarian pálinka) laugh I can test the shadow issue on Monday only, but I'm sure I tested it and worked fine on my machine. What is your desktop resolution when it happens? I normally use HD resolution and 1366x768 window size.

My default screen resolution is 1920x1200.
I tested the shadows in MapBuilder with default settings always, that means 1024x768 windowed.

okay, I'll check it again, but I'm sure I tested it on Friday in 1024x768 mode after the last compilation.
if you set shadow_stencil to 8 in startup settings menu, it uses pssm shadows instead of the default shade-c shadowmapping (shadow_stencil -1), which is definitely perfect.

Just to clarify the things.
I use my monitor in 1920x1200.
I started and use the application in 1024x768 windowed, my monitor stayed in its original resolution.
I didn't set nothing, for example shadows, just i loaded in the wmb and i moved the camera, nothing else.
