It happens to everyone sooner or later. I've found that the following procedure works pretty well for setting delivery dates.
Take the time you feel is the worst case then bump it up to the next common unit of measure and multiply by 2. So, if you're worst case esitmate is 2 weeks then weeks becomes months and 2 becomes 4 so you tell the customer 4 months.
