Yes, you are correct. "ton" is short for town and "ville" is short for village. I guess people are lazy (Or maybe they just think it sounds better?) and don't want to say "Barber Town" so the just combine the two, "Barberton". I hear the Japanese are really notorious for doing this. (They shorten/combine a lot of words. (Playstation/Playsta)) The reason why I asked is that "Groethausen" or "Großhausen" was supposedly the last name of my Mom's side of the family before they changed it to Greathouse which is what I was told was the translation.
