Another thing that you get from learning stuff that you don't seem to need ever are the pattern of that stuff. Different areas of knowledge 'work' different, and could offer you concepts for solutions when you don't expect that.
The elite universities are bringing together specialists from different subjects, because the exchange of their different knowledge leads to more flexible thinking and faster and unexpected solutions, that they don't get, if they stuck on their subject related knowledge only.
