Well the simplest solution to DOF and other features is, to
make it an option in the preferences.

I also did not like the DOF in Gothic3, others like it.
If it can be switched on/off, it shall be implemented as option.

I also have the idea of a "target framerate".
By this, the user just enters the (average) framerate he likes, and gets it.
The LOD, and adjustable effects can be altered in runtime then
to render the scene in the target FPS.

Especially for users who dont like switching options, this is
a really convinent way to have the game run fast enough while
displaying the maximum of effects his hardware can mangage.
